This star-studded revue / cabaret / theatre bar & restaurant is the mastermind of Russell Shapiro, proprietor of the very popular Café Manhattan. In 1997 Russell went with a group of friends to a theatre / restaurant called Over the Top which was his inspiration for On Broadway. He had a location in mind: a corner spot he’d always fancied in Somerset Road, Green Point. After spending a holiday in New York and being dazzled by the bright lights of Broadway, he came up with the name.

In early 2005 Russell decided it was time to relocate to more upmarket, glamorous bigger premises – and in April 2005 On Broadway re-opened to much media buzz at it’s new home – 88 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town.

Eight years after Russell took a chance to fulfil a dream On Broadway is a very successful buzzing venue open seven days a week, providing some of the top entertainment Cape Town has to offer. Russell’s bottom line is ’bums on seats’ and him and his staff work tirelessly to keep the venue busy and buzzing. Over the years Russell has nurtured much new talent. Performers that today are known countrywide and have taken the country by storm in PopStars, Zing and Pop Idols such as Ezra, Francisca Blasich, Chad Saaiman, Mlamli Ningiza and Francois Schreuder . On Broadway is known for it’s eclectic array of shows ranging from musical tribute shows, original musical shows, stand-up comedians to straight plays. Many top performers have performed at On Broadway including artists like Pieter-Dirk Uys, Elzabe Zietsman and Marc Lottering.

With such a solid foundation, On Broadway has been able to provide a platform for less known artists to perform at the venue and many have launched their careers on On Broadway’s stage. Jazz singer Nonthuthuzelo Puoane performed in La Fiesta at On Broadway over the summer season of 1999 / 2000. On Broadway is forging ahead with it’s programme of developmental work. The first project was Oh What A Night, a musical tribute to boy bands with a cast of seven including a live band. Only three of the cast members had previous theatre performance experience on the scale required by this production. Ezra of Pop Idols fame started his career on our stage in this production. Productions since then include Can’t Stop the Music (a tribute to the Village People), Three Tons of Fun, Pure Disco (featuring amongst others Francisca Blasich of Pop Idols 2003 fame), Soul’d Out , Woman in the Moon starring Ilse Klink of Isidingo fame, Rhythm’s Gonna Get You and Soul Party.
