Die Flying Dutchman
- What kind of music? Theatre
- • So eg-Afrikaans soos beskuit, biltong en brandewyn.
• So eg-Suid-Afrikaans soos vuvuzelas, taxis en pap. .
• Beter as ‘n na-skool swem by Oom Jurie se huis.
• Skerper as ‘n Slipknot-fan se knipmes.
• So heilsaam soos koeimelk uit die speen uit drink.
• Skurwer as die Lydenburg jukskeispan se hakskene.
Afreakaanse stand-up comedy at its finest
It’s bright, it’s shiny and it’s going full steam ahead. Sails blazing in the wind, waves clashing against the stern and mags glimmering in the sunlight that breaks through the dark clouds. It’s the maiden voyage of the most non-accursed mission in South African comedy aviation. And it’s coming to a dorp near you.
What is Die Flying Dutchmen?
Combining the comedy of two of the finest non-rugby playing Afrikaans minds in the country, Die Flying Dutchmen strives to give a humorous and unique insight into daily South African life from a distinctive previously-advantaged, currently-confused, yet eternally optimistic cultural perspective. And boy is it funny.Who are Die Flying Dutchmen?
Hannes Brümmer is a rarity amongst young male actors. Rare in the sense that he works. Often. And not as a regular member of any coffee shop-based soap community either. Despite television credits such as actor/writer on Kompleks I & II, he also showed his dramatic skills on stage in Full Circle and the South African classic Mooi Street Moves.Always aware of his funny bones, he started honing his comedy skills as part of Joe Parker’s Improv Express and took to the stand-up stage in 2005. Ever since he’s become a regular face in comedy venues around Gauteng, including appearances at the U.P. Yours! Comedy festival in Pretoria and headlining spots in Johannesburg venues.
Melt Sieberhagen spent the earlier part of his career in television production, getting an insider’s look at the intrinsic mechanics that make up the entertainment business. He also made cameo appearances in movies like Poena is Koning!, which did not garner much support as the local entry into the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. He’s also been able to stay alive with a number of character parts in series such as Gabriël, Isidingo and Home Affairs.
After quite a bit of nagging from his long time friend Hannes, Melt tried his hand at Afrikaans stand-up comedy and found that he actually liked it. And some audience members seemed to enjoy it as well. With Afrikaans stand-up being a very new thing, audiences seemed scarce and he started working the English circuit in and around Johannesburg and ended up winning the Jozi Comedy Showdown in 2008, where he shared the stage with international acts from Canada, Australia, England and the USA. Hannes was able to score tickets to the event by finishing a close second in the competition.
Now these two dangerous minds are available in a Buy 2 Get 2 promotion for an evening of sheer local comedy delight. Stand-up, Dutchmen style.
